Tourism in the Bajo Martín

Albalate castle. The county of Bajo Martín is located right between the historic Bajo Aragón and the Ebro valley, in the province of Zaragoza. This land has been inhabited for thousands of years and its towns and landscapes contain charming, though often inhospitable spots resulting from its extreme and arid nature, as well as traces of its 8,000 years of history. Iberians, Romans, Muslims, Jews and Christians have definitely left their mark in this area.

Albalate and Híjar have been the heads of this county for centuries and they hold a rich artistic heritage. The former was linked to the Archbishopric of Saragossa, while the latter was the seat of the dukedom.
Albalate del Arzobispo is also the southernmost town in the Cultural Park of the River Martín, a place of great natural beauty which spans along the middle tract of the river. The gorges and narrows made by river when passing the mountain contain very interesting cave paintings.

Easter celebrations, which are particularly renowned all over the Historic Bajo Aragón, are the main tourist attraction in this county. Five towns: Albalate del Arzobispo, Híjar, La Puebla de Híjar, Samper de Calanda and Urrea de Gaén, are part of the Route of the Drum and Bass Drum in Bajo Aragón.

The landscape, mostly arid steppe, does not lack beauty and, in the last few years, tourism has grown in the county of Bajo Martín. This is not only a possibility to develop new economic and employment opportunities, but also a way to discover our own land and heritage.
