La Puebla de Híjar

La Puebla de Hijar.La Puebla de Híjar has traditionally been linked to the dukedom of Híjar, as it is very close to this place. It is a very dynamic town and, during the past century, it has been able to take advantage of its railroad station in order to transform itself.

Nowadays La Puebla de Híjar has a population of 1,030. Agriculture, with cereal, olive and sunflower crops, has become a minor source of wealth in the town, while services and industry give employment to most part of the population. The role played by the industrial area of Venta del Barro has been key in its economic transformation.

The town can be divided into two different areas: the pueblo (the traditional town) and the suburb around the train station, which is very populated and which emerged with the arrival of the railroad.

The parish church of the Nativity of Our Lady is the largest building in the old quarter of La Puebla. It is a baroque temple with three naves and a centralized transept over which we can see the vault designed by Agustín Sanz. Strolling around the old city centre the visitor will reach the arched-chapel of Saint Roque, which is also baroque.

In the train station quarter we can visit the chapel of "los Dolores" and the permanent exhibition named "Nuestra Semana Santa" (Our Easter). It should be noted that La Puebla de Híjar belongs to the Route of the Drum and Bass Drum in Bajo Aragón.
