The towns

Jatiel

Jatiel.Jatiel is the smallest of the towns in the county of Bajo Martín, with only 60 people. It is located on the right bank of the river Martín.

In its land there are crops of bagged Calanda peaches and olive trees for the production of olive oil under the Designation of Origin (DO) Bajo Aragón.

Its urban arrangement is adequate and its streets and squares are neat. When ascending towards the oldest houses we can notice the Moorish origins of some streets and alleys. In fact, according to the records kept from 1495, at that time all the citizens were Moors.

In Jatiel you cannot miss the Gothic crypt, an underground structure built in the 14th or 15th century and which has been connected to the order of Saint John of Jerusalem. Its significance lies in the rarity of this type of secular ruins linked to military orders. The construction, made with bricks from Aragón, shows pointed arches and a ribbed vault in the middle of the transept, and its craftsmanship is remarkable.
