Híjar

Híjar.Híjar was the home of one of the most important aristocratic families in the history of Aragón. Today it is the administrative head of the county and, with its 1,952 people, it has become the service centre for the rest of the Bajo Martín.

The streets and houses are built on a series of steps until they reach the top of the hill on which the town is erected. The most remarkable buildings are the parish church and the castle.

The arrangement of the city centre is picturesque, as it contains indisputably beautiful squares, streets and arches. The large and typical balconies decked with wrought iron and the sticking-out eaves are characteristic in most buildings. The gothic style is present in the chapel of San Antonio as well as in the star-ribbed vault of the parish church of Saint Mary.

The Easter celebrations of Híjar are part of the Route of the Drum and Bass Drum in Bajo Aragón, a festivity which has been considered of National Tourist Interest. Extraordinary parades and processions take place and the deafening rumble of hundreds of drums and bass drums does not stop for three days, from the Holy Thursday at midnight (when the hour is "broken") until Resurrection day.
