The cultural capital of the county of Bajo Martín, Albalate del Arzobispo, is placed at the foot of the Sierra de Arcos, which is crossed by deep gorges due to the erosion of the river Martín.
It was one of the main Muslim settlements in this area and, later, it was assigned to the archbishopric of Zaragoza. As a result, the place treasures a rich secular and religious architectural heritage. Today, it has a population of 2,235 and it still is a service and commercial centre for the neighbouring towns.
The city centre, which has been declared as a Historic-Artistic site, consists of a complex network of narrow and steep alleys. At the top, the Episcopal castle, with its beautiful gothic windows, and the church, with its mudejar style tower, both stand out. On a rocky place only ten kilometres away we find the sanctuary of the Virgin of Los Arcos.
The Cultural Park of the River Martín begins in Albalate. Up the river, this Park offers visitors a fascinating cultural and natural heritage. The gorges and narrows of the river, which are ideal for hiking, canyoning and other sport activities, hold numerous examples of Levantine cave painting.
Albalate del Arzobispo is one of the towns in the county which are part of the Route of the Drum and Bass Drum in Bajo Aragón
